PERFORMANCE

“OPERA: A JOURNEY THROUGH MUSICAL DRAMA”

This presentation consisted of choosing selected scenes of some of the most well known operas and then presenting each one in two phases: a. First, the dialogue was translated to English and performed by actors as a short theatrical drama or skit, with no singing. b. Then, what immediately followed was the exact same scene, but this time sung in the original language by wonderful singers dressed in period costumes, such as the composer intended. The idea was to make the audience perceive the full message of the text and the emotional situation. The result was that people who had never seen an opera, felt they had seen something to which they could relate and understand. They were transfixed to their seats and had a wonderful time. The barrier of the language and the problem so often felt (where the text sung in an “operatic” way is many times lost), were removed. In this fashion we represented selections from: Don Carlo (G. Verdi), West Side Story (L. Berstein) Don Pascuale ( G. Donizetti), Tosca ( G. Puccini), Forza del destino ( G. Verdi), Barbiere di Siviglia ( G. Rossini), arias of Carmen ( G. Bizet), Werther ( J. Massenet) Lucia de Lammemoor ( G. Donizetti) And the trio of the first act of Il Trovatore ( G. Verdi)
